Tooth Extractions
A dental extraction (or exodontia), is necessary when a tooth is damaged or decayed past the point of repair or restoration. The problem tooth is removed, and can be replaced with a dental implant or a partial bridge. The most common type of dental extraction is wisdom teeth removal. People have wisdom teeth removed if they grow in and cause pain and discomfort, or become infected or abscessed. Wisdom tooth removal in many cases requires a surgical procedure if the tooth is located below the gum-line or is inaccessible. Gum disease can also cause a tooth to require extraction if the supporting bone and tissue become diseased or decayed to the point where they can’t support the tooth.
We attempt to make the procedure as quick and painless as possible. We numb the area that the tooth will be removed from prior to any extraction. After removing the tooth, it can be replaced with an implant, a dental bridge or dentures. Recovery is usually fairly easy, and may require the use a few over the counter pain killers and ice packs for swelling.
